Solving DC Problems DC Appleseed Solving DC Problems

Contest Winners

We narrowed the field of 900 ideas for solving DC problems to 20 finalists and the public took it from there.

Nearly 1600 people voted online to determine which ideas would win first, second, and third place--and $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000, respectively.

Special thanks to the June and John Hechinger Family Trusts and donors to the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region for sponsoring the prize money.
We also held a special contest for K-12 students in the District. Students submitted over 250 ideas for solving DC problems.

Our panel of judges selected the best idea from each grade level--elementary (K-4), middle (5-8), and high school (9-12)--and one best overall idea.

The Washington Nationals Baseball Club will honor the student winners on the field at RFK Stadium before the Nationals play the Colorado Rockies on June 12.

And as the school with the highest level of participation, Capitol Hill Cluster School will receive the free installation of a "learning garden" or other green space--thanks to Johnson's Florist and Garden Centers and Michael Espenan from the landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden & Associates.

Congratulations to all of the contest winners!
